  • 3/4 cup Crisco Shortening
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 large Egg beaten
  • 1/2 cup Molasses
  • 2 cups Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cloves
For Rolling dough in:
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  1. Using a mixer, cream shortening and sugar until well blended.
  2. Then add beaten egg and Molasses, mix on high for 2 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. In a separate bowl sift together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, ginger and cloves, Repeat a second time. (Sifting the ingredients twice makes certain that the spices are well incorporated. **see notes**
  4. Add dry sifted ingredients 1/3 at a time to creamed mixture.
  5. Place mixing bowl in fridge for 30 minutes to chill.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°.
  7. Using a 1/2" scooping utensil roll dough into balls, then roll in sugar to coat.
  8. Place balls on a parchment paper lined baking sheet 2 1/2" apart. **see notes
  9. Bake for 12 - 15 minutes until browned and crackled, turning the pan at 6 minutes.
  10. Let cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes.
Recipe Notes

If you don't have a sifter, use a mesh strainer and tap the strainer with your hand to sift ingredients.

Cookies will spread out, so be sure and leave room in between them.
